Download LibreWolf Install Guide The TOR Browser Despite the developers' impressive speed of releasing new versions it's important to note that Librewolf is not directly affiliated with Mozilla. LibreWolf is updated frequently, and it appears to keep up with the latest stable Firefox source code. It consumes less resources and is responsive on most systems. Since LibreWolf cuts out a lot of bloat from the Firefox source code, it's pretty lightweight and fast. It's already configured to utilize private search engines such as Searx or Qwant. Disables the saving of login information.Īdditionally, LibreWolf comes with uBlock Origin, a privacy-focused and privacy respecting wide spectrum tracker blocker, already installed and ready to go.Resists common fingerprinting techniques out-of-the-box.An extension firewall where extensions are limited in their abilities to initiate their own network connections. It also features other privacy and security enhancements, to include: This helps make LibreWolf more universally user-friendly, as there are less settings for the average user to worry about tweaking. LibreWolf comes with many of the privacy and security-related about:config settings already tweaked out-of-the-box. In a sense, it's pretty similar to Ungoogled Chromium in terms of principle where Ungoogled Chromium strips the Google out of Chromium, LibreWolf places an emphasis on stripping all Mozilla telemetry and Mozilla-dependent services from the Firefox source code. LibreWolf is a community-driven Firefox fork that focuses on privacy and security specifically, its goal is to put "user privacy, security, and user freedom first." It's the successor to the now defunct Firefox fork, LibreFox. Download Firefox Configure Firefox for Privacy LibreWolf Additionally, it is highly recommended to install add-ons that help preserve your privacy, such as a reliable tracker blocker.įirefox has supported Linux systems for a long time, so installing, running, and configuring it should be a breeze it should be as easy as typing sudo apt-get install firefox in the command line interface (CLI) on many Linux systems. There are many tweaks - both basic and advanced - to be made before you can call it privacy focused. It is important to understand that Firefox doesn't come configured for user privacy from the get-go. Rather, it runs on Mozilla's own Gecko Engine, which is coded with the C++, JavaScript, and Rust (as of 2016, with the introduction of Firefox Quantum) languages. In fact, nowadays, it is one of the few noteworthy browsers with a significant enough share of the browser "market" that doesn't rely on a Chromium engine. It has consistently proven reasonably fast, reliable, and secure. It is tried, true, and tested in many ways. To "harden" Firefox please refer to the avoidthehack Configuring Firefox for Privacy guide.įirefox has been around for a long time. If you're on a Linux-based system - especially a Debian variant - you'll might find Firefox pre-installed on your operating system. Download Ungoogled Chromium Ungoogled Chromium Setup Guide Firefox It helps that Ungoogled Chromium probably runs its best on Linux, given you're running a compatible distro. This browser is fast, lightweight, and compatible with most Chromium based extensions - including those found in the Chrome Web Store. Both of these features can be changed from within the settings. It's also set to automatically wipe your browsing session - such as cookies and browsing history - when you close it. In turn, your privacy is better maintained because your browser isn't directly communicating/sharing information with these remote servers.Īdditionally, the default settings for Ungoogled Chromium are privacy friendly as well.įor example, there is no set default for search providers when you open the browser. UNGOOGLED CHROMIUM WEB STORE CODEUngoogled Chromium strips the source code and dependencies that make callbacks to Google's servers, such as Google Location Services. It is also the same code-base that regular Google Chrome is derived from.) (Chromium is the open-source framework developed and mostly maintained by Google. Ungoogled Chromium is just what its name implies it is the de-googled version of Chromium. If you're either 1) using Google Chrome or 2) simply need a Chromium-based browser for whatever reason while on your Linux or macOS machine, Ungoogled Chromium is your best bet.

Significant Momentous Unimportant Critical Of great importance Trivial means of little value or importance. The history of trivial goes back to the Latin word trivium, formed from the prefix tri-, "three," and via, "road." Trivium thus meant "the meeting place of three roads, especially as a place of public resort." The publicness of such a place also gave the word a pejorative sense that we express in the phrase the gutter, as in "His manners were formed in the gutter." The Latin adjective triviālis, derived from trivium, thus meant "appropriate to the street corner, commonplace, vulgar." Trivial is first recorded in English with a sense identical to that of triviālis in 1589. We find in a work from 1432-50 mention of the "arte trivialle," an allusion to the three liberal arts that made up the trivium, the lower division of the seven liberal arts taught in medieval universities-grammar, rhetoric, and logic. Word History: The word trivial entered Middle English with senses quite different from its most common contemporary ones. What is picayune is of negligible value or importance: "Everything was numbers-oriented-better to close out thirty-five picayune cases than go after two quality ones" (Selwyn Raab). Petty usually refers to what is of minor or lesser significance: "Religious slurs, temper tantrums, insults, coercion, debt: all petty things, really, irritants-too minor, it would seem, to move five reasonable people to murder" (Donna Tartt). Paltry describes what falls so far short of what is required or desired that it arouses contempt: "The mere fact of grave issues in life depending on such paltry things is monstrously ludicrous" (George Gissing). For example, in the Ruby on Rails sub-section, I have a Notion database with the name of the topic, its group, and the level of difficulty. I usually have a "topics and roadmap" sub-section with a description of specific topics related to the programming language. Inside each sub-section (these are actually Notion Pages) I'm taking notes of what I consider to be useful: some basic information that I need to remember, special cases, common problems and their solutions, cheatsheets, etc. In this section, I have all the information related to the main programming languages I'm learning, as well as related tools, such as Git and GitHub. Complex layouts also don't work too well on mobiles. I tried many other ways of organising my notes, often involving complex Notion databases and relations between notes, or complex multicolumn designs on each Notion Page, but I found that complexity often gets in the way of the ultimate objective: a simple way to insert and extract information. At first, I didn't follow a set structure, but as new concepts came in, I decided to divide my notes into the following parts: When I started studying web development I decided to use Notion as a note-taking system. Notion ideas code#Notion is my preferred tool to implement a commonplace book for code related knowledge. Notion ideas software#When it comes to software development, having a commonplace book is one of the best things we can do to organise the different coding topics, to keep track of things, and to help not forget concepts. For example, journaling is better done on a dotted physical book, Evernote is better suited to store (and retrieve) PDFs and documents, and Notion is excellent for handling a large amount of data that needs to be interconnected. After having used them all, I found that some of them are better suited for certain kinds of objectives. Learning about these kinds of notebooks pushed me into trying different methods to organise topics I was interested in: from physical notebooks (such as dotted, blank, squared), to digital notebooks (Evernote, OneNote and Notion). Each one is unique to its creator's particular interests but they almost always include passages found in other texts, sometimes accompanied by the compiler's responses. Commonplaces are used by readers, writers, students, and scholars as an aid for remembering useful concepts or facts. Entries are most often organized under subject headings. Such books are similar to scrapbooks filled with items of many kinds: notes, maxims, quotes, letters, tables of weights and measures, and recipes (.). They have been kept from antiquity, and were kept particularly during the Renaissance and in the nineteenth century. Some years ago, looking into something unrelated to programming, I discovered the idea of commonplace books:Ĭommonplace books (or commonplaces) are a way to compile knowledge, usually by writing information into books. The best solution (so far) I found to cope with all of this is to maintain a commonplace book. I was forgetting things as I learned new ones.too many technologies to keep track of,.I immediately found the following problems: When I first started diving into the web development world I felt overwhelmed by the amount of information out there, and all the topics I wanted to explore and learn. The archenteron develops into the alimentary canal, and a mouth opening is formed by invagination of ectoderm at the pole opposite the blastopore of the gastrula. The resulting coelom is termed an enterocoelom. This happens when the mesodermal pouches become separated from the invaginating endodermal layer forming the archenteron, then expand and fuse to form the coelomic cavity. In deuterostomes, the endodermal lining of the archenteron usually forms buds called coelomic pouches that expand and ultimately obliterate the embryonic blastocoel (the cavity within the blastula and early gastrula) to become the embryonic mesoderm, the third germ layer. #Annelid blastopore series#There are a series of other developmental characteristics that differ between protostomes and deuterostomes, including the type of early cleavage (embryonic cell division) and the mode of formation of the coelom of the embryo: Protosomes typically exhibit spiral mosaic cleavage whereas deuterostomes exhibit radial regulative cleavage. In protostomes (“mouth first”), the first embryonic opening becomes the mouth, and the second opening becomes the anus. The word deuterostome comes from the Greek word meaning “mouth second,” indicating that the mouth develops as a secondary structure opposite the location of the blastopore, which becomes the anus. Recall that protostomes and deuterostomes differ in certain aspects of their embryonic development, and they are named based on which opening of the archenteron (primitive gut tube) develops first. The phyla Echinodermata and Chordata (the phylum that includes humans) both belong to the superphylum Deuterostomia. These are not people who enjoy studying foreign languages, or have only learnt keywords/phrases, or simply have a knack for picking up languages - these are people who likely will have studied these languages in depth and arrived at a high level of fluency. In each of these instances, the person described as a "linguist" is accomplished at speaking (generally a great number) of foreign languages. He was a formidable linguist, speaking 25 languages and many moreĪ skilled linguist, Marianne used her new-found freedom to become an He was also an accomplished linguist speaking nine foreign languages Someone with a strong propensity for studying/learning foreign languages may be said to have good linguistic skills, but somebody who studies how a language or languages in general work OR who is accomplished in languages, is a linguist.Īt first sight, the definition in your question, "A person skilled in foreign languages." surprised me as it seemed so simplistic (compare to MW's definition above), but looking at the example sentences that accompany this definition, we have With the rise of historical linguistics in the 19th century, It traditionallyĮncompasses semantics, syntax, and phonology. Meaning “science of language” is first attested 1716 ( philologue “linguist” is from 1590s philologer “linguistic scholar” is from 1650s) this confusing secondary sense has not been popular in the U.S., where linguistics is preferred. The use of linguistic to mean “of or pertaining to language or languages” is “hardly justifiable etymologically,” according to OED, but “has arisen because lingual suggests irrelevant associations.”īefore that, the study of language was called philology. “the science of languages,” 1847 see linguistic also see -ics.ġ856, from French linguistique (1833) see linguist + -ic. The word didn’t refer to the study of language until later, and to linguistics much, much later: The original sense survives in the double entendre cunning linguist. Meaning “a student of language” first attested 1640s. The earliest sense of linguist simply means a skilled speaker, such as a rhetorician (Online Etymology Dictionary):ġ580s, “a master of language, one who uses his tongue freely,” a hybrid from Latin lingua “language, tongue” (see lingual) + -ist. I doubt the word would be a back-formation from "linguistics".Īs a side question, would the first sense now be considered to be colloquial or at least nontechnical or outdated? My original opinion was the latter sense but on thinking about it I now expect it to be the former. I would like to know which of these senses is the original one? Now I don't have access to a better dictionary on historical principles from my current location. Here's the defs from (chosen at random): So I looked up "linguist" in some imperfect online dictionaries and was surprised to find both senses. But I was uncomfortable with his opinion that you had to have certain pieces of paper to be called a linguist, I think "post doctorate" from memory. My instinct was that the ranter was kind of right in his opinion that people who speak many languages are not linguists. I'm personally interested in both linguistics and languages as a hobby but I have no official training and certainly no qualifications in either. I have been listening to some rants on YouTube against people learning a bunch of languages calling themselves "linguists".
